Haring, Hutspot en Wittebrood
The siege of Leiden occurred during the Eighty Years War in 1573 and 1574, when the Spanish under Francisco de Valdez attempted to capture the rebellious city of Leiden, South Holland, The Netherlands. The siege failed when the city was successfully relieved at the 3rd of October 1574. thousands of townspeople did die from the plague and starvation.
Herring, Hotchpotch and White Bread was the first food that entered the city walls of Leiden, when the siege ended.
Every year on the 3rd of October the people of Leiden celebrate this with lots of street festivities, like the entry of the “Geuzen”, veteran Dutch sea-men, that came on flat bottom ships to relieve Leiden.
The colour of the Leiden flag is Red and White, so every citizen that takes part of the festivities is dressed in red and white and these items you can buy at the 3 October Service Point.
